Why Pengu exists

I wanted better Discord activity. Pengu grew from there.

I did not like the way Discord showed game-based activity, so I made Pengu as my own desktop companion. The idea started simple: know what I am playing, keep track of the useful details, and send the right parts to Discord so the activity actually feels personal.

Built around the Pengu plush my girlfriend gave me.
I · Presence

Discord activity, but with more personality.

Pengu tracks what games you play, how long you play them, and the important data a game exposes. It can then send the useful parts to your Discord client for more detailed activity instead of a generic game name.

The custom artwork is based on my plushy Pengu — a gift from my girlfriend that I ended up naming the whole app after. The artwork and game-mapping setup on my side is intentionally simple too: just two Discord channels handle the setup.

II · Playtime

Then I wanted to know how much I actually play.

A lot of games do not give you a useful daily playtime view, so I added tracking for today and recent days. Once Pengu was already giving games extra information, I thought: “mmmh... why not add the features I normally need separate apps for?”

That is how things like the Riot rank tools and the Path of Exile features started becoming part of Pengu instead of separate utilities.

III · Performance

It also had to stay lightweight.

At one point Pengu used about 400 MB of RAM and around 3% across two cores on my 16-core 9750X3D. That was not a big problem on my PC, but some friends with weaker systems noticed it, so I went through every part and function and optimized it.

IV · Browser

Then a friend complained about his ad blocker.

When I was almost out of ideas, one of my friends kept complaining that his ad blocker was not working properly. That made me wonder if Pengu could have a browser companion too — something that could show tracked websites in Discord and also handle normal browser utilities.

That became the Pengu Browser Companion: optional website presence, ad blocking, clean links, remembered site volume, game tabs and the other browser tools that now live alongside the desktop app.

Live activity preview

What Discord sees, automatically.

Pengu changes your activity as you switch games, exposes richer details where available, and falls back cleanly when you step away.

Works in the background

You play. Pengu handles the boring part.

Why Pengu

One small app. A useful set of tools.

Built around the things you actually want from a desktop companion: detection, Discord presence, game details and a few extras when they are useful.

Automatic game detection

Pengu follows whatever game you open and can prioritize the focused game when more than one is running.

ExampleElden Ring → VALORANT as you switch focus

Richer Discord activity

Every game can be detected, while mapped integrations can add mode, rank, character or match details when that data is available.

ExampleVALORANT • Competitive • Diamond 2

Playtime tracking

See today's total, a per-game breakdown and the last seven days without turning Pengu into a giant analytics dashboard.

ExampleToday 3h 42m • 7 days 18h 16m

Per-game privacy

Show a game fully, reduce it to “Playing a game”, or hide it from Pengu's Discord activity entirely.

Game tools

Extra features where they make sense.

Pengu keeps game-specific tools separate, so you can use the parts that matter to you and ignore everything else.

Detection across your library

Pengu can follow any game you launch; mapped integrations add richer details where the game exposes useful data.

Browser companion

Useful browser extras, kept optional.

The browser extension can connect explicitly tracked websites to Pengu and adds a handful of practical site tools. The desktop app works without it.
